VARAC Vintage Grand Prix 2019

VARAC Vintage Grand Prix 2019

Since 1979 VARAC, Vintage Automobile Racing Association of Canada, has been hosting this annual event, first at Shannonville Motorsport Park, then at Mosport, now Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Every year hundreds of vintage race car gather to share their passion for racing cars from years gone by. The wide variety of cars includes open and closed wheel cars, sedans, coupes, roadsters, formulae of all sizes.
To celebrate the 40th year of racing, VARAC is highlighting the grassroots racer, the racer who builds a race car in the garage or back yard or driveway; the racer who has a limited budget and races for the love of the sport, not for money, all together at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, just north of Bowmanville, Ontario.
With over 300 entries this weekend, the schedule will be full and then some. MG, Triumph, Corvette, Mustang, Lotus, TVR, Mazda, Daimler, Porsche and a special group, Vintage Volvo. Racers come from across Canada and the United States, their beloved cars on or in trailers, their tow vehicle varying from pickups to motorhomes, all headed to the same destination…the race track.
Friday is the day the racers unload their cars, set them up for the track, get them scrutineered for safety and regulations, clean them, practice and then qualify for starting positions. It is a very busy day, yet the racers are relaxed, talking to each other and sharing stories, welcoming visitors and showing off their cars. For some racers, the camaraderie is as important as the racing.
Today I saw some very special cars including a 1965 Shelby Daytona Coupe, brought in from Manitoba. Other cars come from Maryland, New York, Alberta, Quebec, all parts of Ontario and many more locales. All gathered to share their sport and hobby. It is worth the drive to the race track.
