2019 livery for the SportPesa Racing point FI team revealed in Toronto

On the Wednesday before the Toronto Canadian International Autoshow the newly reformulated Racing Point FI team unveiled its 2019 livery on a show car mocked up with the new wings to look like the 2019 car. This team was formerly the Force India team which went into ‘administration’ (like receivership in Canada) and was sold to a consortium of investors headed up by the Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll last summer. This team was originally the Jordan F1 team and it is based in a location near the Silverstone circuit. (I once found myself stranded at this Jordan location after a British GP – but that’s a whole different story.)

The team made a decision to hold this launch in Canada instead of in a location at or near its headquarters in England. There is a kind of logic to this given the Canadian ownership and the fact that Stroll’s son Lance Stroll has been named to be a driver for the team. In the past this season-opening reveal has been done via a video link from a studio so holding it here in Toronto is not a big stretch and it did bring out an enthusiastic crowd of backers and fans of the team.

This year they say that they have double the funding and that they expect this will enable them to proceed with development much faster than before. They have added a new title sponsor, the online betting site SportPesa, in addition to the BWT water treatment provider – so now their livery is a mishmash of sponsor colours – blue for SportPesa and pink/white for BWT. Despite this, their goal remains to be the best of the rest – that is, to finish in fourth place in the standings behind the big three of Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull. With some of the other once-dominant teams like Williams and McLaren determined to improve their standings as well, this will be no easy task.

With the first open official testing session set for next Monday, February 18, we can expect to see photos of all the actual new 2019 cars when they roll out on the race track at Barcelona.
