PREVIEW: August 24-25, 2019: IndyCar at St. Louis, IMSA at VIR, NASCAR at Elkhart Lake and CTMP

Saturday, August 24

1. NASCAR Xfinity CTECH Manufacturing 180, Road America
• TV: TSN2 at 3:00P
• 4.048 mi circuit; 45 laps = 182.16 mi; Stages: 10/10/25 laps
• The winner here last year was Justin Allgaier. Matt Tifft was second and Daniel Hemric was third.
• Tyler Reddick came from the back twice to win last week’s NXS race at Bristol. He held off a late race charge from Chase Briscoe, who finished second. John Hunter Nemechek was third.
• Including the Road America race, there are still four more races in the ‘regular season’ before the playoffs being with the race at Richmond on September 20.

2. NTT IndyCar Series Bommarito Automotive Group 500, World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, Madison, IL
• TV: SN World at 8:00P
• 1.25 mi; 248 laps = 310 mi (499 km)
• Will Power won the race here last year. Alexander Rossi was second and Scott Dixon finished in third place.
• The Indy cars raced at Pocono last week and the race started with a controversial multi-car pileup on the first lap. Will Power was the eventual winner, his first win of the 2019 season. Scott Dixon was second and Simon Pagenaud was third.
• After this race at Gateway there are only two more races left in the IndyCar season, Portland and Laguna Seca.

Sunday, August 25

3. IMSA WeatherTech Michelin Challenge at VIR, Virginia Intl. Raceway
• TV: DVELO at 1:30P
• 3.27 mile circuit; race duration is 160 minutes
• Last year, the RLL BMW Team won overall in their GTLM No. 25 BMW M8 driven by Connor dePhillippi/Alexander Sims; the No. 14 GTD Lexus RC F GT3 driven by Kyle Marcelli and Dominik Baumann was the winner of the GTD class, finishing in seventh place overall. Note that this race was only for GTLM and GTD competitors.
• The most recent IMSA WeatherTech race was run at Road America three weeks ago on August 4 – for all classes. A pair of Ford GTs were first and second in the GTLM class, with the duo of Ryan Briscoe/Richard Westbrook coming home first in class and 12th overall in the No. 67 car. The GTD class winner was the No. 9 PFAFF Porsche GT3 driven by Zacharie Robichon/Matt Campbell, finishing in 19th place overall, two laps down on the GTLM class winners.
• After the VIR event, there are two more races (each for all classes) in the 2019 season – Laguna Seca and the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta.

4. NASCAR Gander Outdoors Trucks Chevrolet Silverado 250, Canadian Tire
Motorsport Park
• TV: FSR at 2:30P (also via direct streaming on https://www.nascar.com/trucksincanada/)
• 2.459 mi road course; 64 laps = 157.38 mi; Stages: 20/20/24 laps
• Justin Haley won last year’s event here; John Hunter Nemechek finished second and Brett Moffitt was third.
• The most recent NGOTS race was run at Bristol last week. Brett Moffitt took the win over Chandler Smith and Ross Chastain.
• There are four Canadian drivers entered in this north-of-the-border event: Gary Klutt, Alex Tagliani, Stewart Friesen, and Raphael Lessard. Of these, Tagliani, who is driving the No. 51 Kyle Busch truck, looks to have the best chance of winning the race.
• This is the second race of the first three-race round in the truck series playoffs. Six of the eight playoff divers will move forward to the second round, the Round of Six, after the next race, the Las Vegas event on September 13.
