PREVIEW: September 20-21-22, 2019: F1 at Singapore, Indycar at Laguna Seca and NASCAR at Richmond

Friday, September 20

1. NASCAR Xfinity GoBowling 250 at Richmond Raceway
• TV: TSN2 at 7:30P
• 0.75 mi; 250 laps = 187.5 mi; Stages: 75/75/100 laps
• Christopher Bell won this race a year ago. Ross Chastain was second and Daniel Hemric was third.
• Last week at Las Vegas, Tyler Reddick was the race winner while Bell finished second and Brandon Jones was third.
• The NXS playoffs are made up of two three-race elimination rounds starting with this week’s race at Richmond followed by the championship finale at Homestead. 12 drivers have qualified for the NXS playoffs: Bell, Cole Custer, Reddick, Austin Cindric, Chase Briscoe, Justin Allgaier, Michael Annett, Noah Gragson, Brandon Jones, Justin Haley, Ryan Sieg and John Hunter Nemechek.

Saturday, September 21

2. NASCAR MENCS, Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond Raceway
• TV: TSN3 at 7:30P
• 0.75 mi; 400 laps = 300 mi; Stages: 100/100/200 laps
• The winner here last year was Kyle Busch. Kevin Harvick finished second and Martin Truex was third.
• Truex won at Las Vegas last week, his fifth win of the 2019 season – the most wins for any Cup driver so far this year. Harvick was second and Brad Keselowski recovered from a weak start to his race to finish in third place.
• This MENCS payoffs are made up of three, three-race elimination rounds and a one-race finale at Homestead. The Richmond race is the second race in the first round. This round ends after next week’s race at Charlotte and the bottom four playoff drivers will be eliminated at that point – with 12 drivers going on to the second round of three races beginning with Dover.

Sunday, September 22

3. FIA Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, Marina Bay, Singapore
• TV: TSN5 at 8:05A
• 5.063 km; 61 laps = 308.706 km
• Lewis Hamilton won here in 2018 over Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel (Mercedes-Red Bull-Ferrari).
• The most recent race this year was the Italian GP at Monza two weeks ago. Charles Leclerc won the race for Ferrari, his second F1 win in a row. The two Mercedes drivers – Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton finished in second and third places respectively. It was a bad day for Vettel who ended up in 13th place a lap down on the race winner – and behind Lawrence Stroll.

4. NTT IndyCar Series Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca
• TV: NBC/SN-World at 2:30P
• 2.238 mi (3.602 km); 90 laps = 201.42 mi
• This Laguna Seca race has replaced the Sonoma event on the IndyCar calendar. Last year at Sonoma, the winner was Ryan Hunter-Reay. Scott Dixon was second and Will Power was third. This is the first Indy car race at Laguna Seca since 2004 when it was run as a CART/Champ Car race; it was won that year by the Canadian driver Patrick Carpentier.
• The most recent IndyCar race this year was the Grand Prix of Portland, run three weeks ago in Portland, Oregon. It was won by Power over Felix Rosenqvist and Alexander Rossi.
• This week’s Monterey race is the season finale and it will determine the 2019 champion. Josef Newgarden is the current points leader with 593 points. Rossi is second with 552 points and Simon Pagenaud is third with 551 points. Double points will be awarded to the finishers in the finale at Monterey with a maximum of 106 points going to the race winner.
