PREVIEW: September 28-29, 2019: F1 in Russia; NASCAR at Charlotte and Jukasa

Saturday, September 28

1. NASCAR Xfinity Drive for the Cure 250, Charlotte Motor Speedway
• TV: TSN2 at 3:30P
• lap length: 2.28 mi; 67 laps = 153 mi (246 km); Stages: 20/20/27 laps
• Chase Briscoe won here last year. Justin Marks was second and Austin Cindric was third.
• The winner of last week’s Xfinity race at Richmond was Christopher Bell who dominated the race. Austin Cindric finished second and Cole Custer was third. Justin Allgaier, another of the favourites to win the series championship was fourth.
• The Charlotte Xfinity race is the second of the three races in this, the first three-race elimination round. After next week’s race at Dover, the bottom four playoff drivers will be eliminated leaving eight to go on to the second three-race elimination round beginning at Kansas in three week’s time.

2. NASCAR Pinty's Series, Pinty’s Fall Brawl, Jukasa Motor Speedway
• TV: delayed, Oct 6 on TSN1/3/4/5 at 12:30P
• lap length: 0.625 mi (5/8 mi); 200 laps = 125 mi
• The finale at Jukasa a year ago was won by D. J. Kennington over Donald Theetge and Kevin Lacroix. L.P. Dumoulin won the series title over Alex Tagliani and Kennington.
• Last week the Pinty’s Series raced at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The race was won by Andrew Ranger over Alex Labbe and D.J. Kennington.
• This race at Jukasa is the season finale. Going into this race, Ranger is leading in championship points with 509 to Kevin Lacroix with 498 and L.P. Dumoulin with 471. A win is worth about 50 points.

Sunday, September 29

3. FIA Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix, Sochi, Russia
• TV:TSN1/3/5 at 7:05A
• lap length: 5.848 km; 53 laps = 309.745 km
• In last year’s Russian GP, Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas scored a one-two win here over third-place Sebastian Vettel.
• Sebastian Vettel ended a year-long drought with a win at Singapore last week. His teammate, who had qualified on the pole ended up second while Max Verstappen was third, freezing out both Mercedes drivers from podium finishes. This was the third win for Ferrari in the last three Grands Prix.

4. NASCAR MENCS, Bank of America ROVAL 400, Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course
• TV: NBC/TSN1 at 2:00P
• lap length: 2.28 mi; 109 laps = 249 mi (400 km); Stages: 25/25/59 laps
• In a surprise finish when the front runners spun in the final corner Ryan Blaney emerged as the race winner here last year. Jamie McMurray was second and Clint Bowyer was third.
• Last week at Richmond, Martin Truex led the closing laps of the race to take the win over Kyle Busch. This was Martin’s sixth win this year and his second in a row in the playoffs. Denny Hamlin came home third, making it a one-two-three finish for the Joe Gibbs team.
• This is the third race in the first three-race elimination round. After this race, the bottom three playoff drivers will be eliminated and the remaining 12 will go forward to the next three-race elimination round. Going into this race, Alex Bowman, Bowyer and Kurt Busch are below the cut line.
