NASCAR bans all use of the confederate flag at its events

NASCAR: “The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.”
Prior to this, NASCAR had forbidden the use of the flag in any official manner, leaving it open to race fans to display the flag on their vehicles and camp sites on the race track grounds.
At one time in earlier years, the ‘rebel flag’ had been an integral part of the branding of NASCAR races at tracks in the deep South such as Darlington and Talladega.
No doubt this new announcement of a complete ban will elicit some strong backlash from the 'good old boys' who form a significant portion of the traditional NASCAR fan base -- especially below the Mason-Dixon Line.
