PREVIEW: Indy 500; NASCAR at Dover (x5); IMSA at VIR

Friday, August 21

1. NASCAR NGROTS Trucks KDI Office Technology 200, Dover Intl. Speedway
• TV: Fox Sports Racing at 5:00P
• “Monster Mile’ paved oval, 1-mile; 200 laps = 200 mi; Stages: 45/45/110 laps
• no spectators; no practice or qualifying sessions
• The only Truck Series race held here last year was run on May 3rd. Johnny Sauter won the race ahead of Brett Moffitt, Harrison Burton, Grant Enfinger, and Matt Crafton.
• The most recent NASCAR Truck Series race was run on the Daytona road course last Saturday. Sheldon Creed was the race winner; his second win in the 2020 NGROTS season. Brett Moffitt was a close second and the young Quebec driver Raphael Lessard was third.

Saturday, August 22

2. NASCAR Xfinity Drydene 200 #1, Dover Intl. Speedway
• TV: TSN4 at 12:30P
• “Monster Mile’ paved oval, 1-mile; 200 laps = 200 mi; Stages: 45/45/110 laps
• no spectators; no practice or qualifying sessions
• There were two Xfinity races here last year. The first, the Allied Steel Buildings 200, was run on May 4th. Christopher Bell was the race winner over Justin Allgaier and Tyler Reddick. The second, the ‘Use Your Melon Drive Sober 200' was run on October 5th. This playoff race was won by Cole Custer; Allgaier was second and Austin cindric was third.
• The most recent Xfinity race was the UNOH 188 at Daytona. Austin Cindric was the race winner; his fifth win is six races. Brandon Jones was second and Noah Gragson was third.

3. NASCAR Cup Series Drydene 311 #1, Dover Intl. Speedway
• TSN4 at 4:00P
• “Monster Mile’ paved oval, 1-mile; 311 laps = 311 mi; Stages: 70/115/126 laps
• no spectators; no practice or qualifying sessions
• August 21, 2020
• Last year there were two NASCAR Cup races at Dover. The first was the Gander RV 400 on May 6th. Martin Truex won here in the spring. Alex Bowman was second and Kyle Larson was third. The second Cup race here was the Drydene 400 on October 6th. Larson was the winner in the Fall race over Truex and Bowman.
• The most recent NASCAR Cup race was run on the Daytona Road Course last Sunday. Chase Elliott won that race ahead of Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex.

4. IMSA WeatherTech Series, Michelin GT Challenge at VIR, VIRginia Intl. Raceway
• TV: TAPE DELAYED TO SUNDAY at 10:00A on Discovery Velocity (the race is scheduled to run on Saturday at 2:00P, there is live scoring and a live radio broadcast on imsa.com)
• 3.27 mi road course; race duration = 160 minutes
• Given the tight confines of this course, IMSA only allows the GT cars (GTLM + GTD) to run here; the entry list only includes 20 cars (6 GTLM + 14 GTD)
• no spectators; practice and qualifying sessions will be held
• Last year here the team of Patrick Pilet/Nick Tandy won in their GTLM Porsche 911. While the GTD class was won by Jeroen Bleekemolen/Ben Keating in their Mercedes-AMG.
• The most recent IMSA race was the one at Road America three weeks ago. The GTLM class was won by Antonio Garcia/Jordan Taylor in a C8.R Corvette; Tommy Milner/Oliver Gavin were second in class in the other team Corvette. In GTD, the pair of Townsend Bell/Frankie Montecalvo in their Lexus RC F beat out the Acura NSX of Mario Farnbacher/Matt McMurray on the final lap in the rain.

Sunday, August 23

5. NTT IndyCar Indianapolis 500, Indianapolis Motor Speedway
• TV: NBC or SN360 at 1:00P
• 2.500 mi rectangular paved oval; 200 laps = 500 mi
• no spectators; practice and qualifying sessions have been held
• Last year here Simon Pagenaud won the race. Alexander Rossi was second, Takuma Sato was third.
• The most recent IndyCar race this year was held at Iowa (the second race in a double-header here) on July 18. Josef Newgarden was the race winner ahead of Will Power, Graham Rahal , Pagenaud and Scott Dixon.
