1. NASCAR Cup Series O'Reilly Auto Parts 253 At Daytona
• Race Date: Sunday, February 21, 2021

• VENUE: The Daytona International Speedway road course – 14 turns, 3.61 miles – which is made up of an infield road course section and most of the oval track (joining the oval just before NASCAR Turn #1 and continuing around through the other tree corners and past the frontstretch pit lane. There is a chicane, commonly called the ‘bus stop chicane’ located on the backstretch closer to NASCAR Turn #3. Once the cars pass the Start/Finish line on the oval they dive down into the infield. This configuration, which has been the standard for the sports car Rolex 24, is modified for NASCAR events by the addition of an extra chicane on the frontstretch just after the NASCAR oval’s Turn 4 (as was the case for the Daytona road course event run as part of the NASCAR Cup championship last year.

NASCAR has tweaked the Daytona International Speedway Road Course’s bus stop chicane before this weekend’s national series tripleheader, following driver feedback from the season-opening Busch Clash.
The sanctioning body added rumble strips to the Turn 9 and Turn 10 chicane on the backstretch to prevent cars from getting into the grass and spraying dirt onto the racing surface and other cars.
The rumble strips will be the same as the front chicane. The one to the driver’s right on entry is approximately 36 feet long, and the other is approximately 30 feet long.

THE EVENT: This is the second time in the track’s history that NASCAR National Series events have been run on the road course which is usually only used by sports for the Rolex 24-hour race. The last time was last year on the weekend of August 15-16 when all three National Series events (plus ARCA) were run here in compensation for the series’ inability to run on the Watkins Glen road course due to pandemic restrictions in New York state. Last year, a second NASCAR Cup road course event was held at Charlotte and two additional Xfinity Series races were held on road courses, one at the IMS road course in July and one at Road America in August

This year all three National Series will race here this February weekend. NASCAR has scheduled more road course weekends, COTA (NCS, NXS), Sonoma (NCS), Mid-Ohio (NXS), Road America (NXS, NCS), Watkins Glen (NCS, NXS, Trucks), and IMS (NCS, NXS) for later this season. The COTA event in May is a first for NASCAR at that road course venue. In all, seven road courses will be used this year, a record number for NASCAR; the previous record was four – in 1964 and 1957.
