Davidson: Another Xfinity win at Phoenix for Cindric

Avondale, AZ, Mar 13/21 (by John Davidson): Austin Cindric won a wild last-two-lap restart to score his second consecutive win at Phoenix Raceway and second victory in the 2021 season, leading 119 of the 200 laps in the ‘Call Before You Dig 200' NASCAR Xfinity Series race. Cindric raced under the checkered flag a third of a second ahead of rookie and Ty Gibbs, who had won his first-ever Xfinity race on the Daytona road course a few weeks ago, after Justin Allgaier and Daniel Hemric fell short in their last lap challenges for the win.

Starting from the second row, Cindric took the lead from Daniel Hemric at the start of the race and he went on to win the first Stage. Then a slow pit stop dropped him to sixth and he spent the rest of this Stage chasing the front runners, finishing the Stage in fourth place. He came out of the pits in second place behind Allgaier and on the next restart, on lap 129, he regained the lead. After two more cautions, on the restart after the eighth caution on lap 144, he fought his way into the lead and he was able to maintain this position, despite three more cautions.

Coming to the final restart with only two laps left, Allgaier jumped to the outside, racing for the win. "I think it was role-reversal from the last time here," said Cindric. "He [Allgaier] got a really great restart and stuck it on top of three there and we were fighting for track position. ... He just got a really great launch. I think he anticipated the restart really well and got to my outside. He faked low and went high and had the momentum that was hard to block. I was trying to defend the bottom, middle and top. I got the air sucked off my door a little bit. it was just hard racing a little bit there. It sucks that he got into the wall there because I think we were going to have a good race to the end there. I don't think our lap one to two speed was our strength so I definitely got a little fortunate there.

"They [wins] never come easy," he added. "This is a really important track this season [given that the championship will be decided here at the end of the season] and I am pumped for this team. Hopefully we put on a great show there. We were ruining each other there at the end. I am proud to get into victory lane and hopefully we can carry it over to the fall here."
