In a late announcement Indycar has reversed itself: Canadians can watch the St Petersburg race on sportsnet.ca for free.

Here’s the text from the website which was posted on Saturday afternoon:

“The 2019 IndyCar season gets underway Sunday and fans can watch the first race of the campaign, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, live and for free on sportsnet.ca.

“Tune in right here (sportsnet.ca) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET/10:00 a.m. PT to watch the race in its entirety.

For the remainder of the 2019 season, SN NOW+ is home of the most comprehensive IndyCar coverage in Canada. Livestream qualifying, all 17 races and other exclusive content with a subscription. On television, all races except for the season opener (due to a scheduling conflict) will air on Sportsnet World.”

So Canadians have been told that they are being given a last-minute reprieve and that they will be able to watch the first race of the season (via internet streaming) without a pay wall barrier. However, the message confirms that the remaining seven races not available in Canada via NBC or Sportsnet One will remain behind a pay wall – either a significant premium fee for Sportsnet World via your television service provider or for SN NOW+ (an internet streaming service).

So, enjoy your freebie while you can ...
