The Tesla Model X at NAIAS Detroit Auto Show

The Tesla Model X at NAIAS Detroit Auto Show
The latest car from high-performance electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla Motors is the Model X, a crossover that combines the SUV and minivan charcteristics.

The Model X will seat 7 and features optional dual motor all-wheel drive, a system comprised of electric motors mounted on both axles. When so equipped, the Model X produces 50% more torque and is capable of posting sub-five second 0-60 mph times.

Tesla vehicles are unique in many ways, but two Model X features are worth noting here.

The first are what Tesla calls Falcon Wing rear doors that lift up and extend outward when opened. Watching them open during the press conference was one of the most impressive things I witnessed during the preview- it's just really cool.

The other neat feature- one that will surely be a big selling feature is the enormous 17-inch Tesla Touchscreen that controls the vehicle's infotainment and climate settings. Again, a very cool feature borrowed from the Tesla Model S.

Reservations for the Model X cost $5,000 with deliveries to begin next year. The MSRP has yet to be revealed.
