Chrysler CEO Mike Manley and SRT President and CEO Ralph Gilles headlined the opening event of the Detroit Auto Show with a presentation of the manufacturer’s new Jeep lineup.

Included in the unveiling was the 2014 Compass, Patriot, Grand Cherokee and the all-new Grand Cherokee SRT.

Dropping the previous SRT8 moniker, the Cherokee SRT sports a newly redesigned front and rear fascia, with more aggressive styling and an edgier look.

Along with the visual updates on the exterior, a new, fully-electronic eight-speed automatic powertrain improves fuel economy through an Eco Mode setting that works in combination with the SUV’s Fuel Saver Technology.

Power was also upgraded on the 6.4-litre HEMI V8. At 470 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque, towing capacity is also improved by 44 per cent to 3,265 kg (7,200 lb), making for an extremely muscular, sporty package.

Included in the interior upgrades, a new Uconnect multimedia centre features a full-colour 8.4-inch in-dash touchscreen and seven-inch multi-display gauge cluster, allowing drivers to customize what information is shown in the traditional cluster location.

The interior featured a clean mix of leather, carbon-fibre and aluminum trim for a balance of function, drivability and style in an unexpected update for the 2014 model.

When asked to comment on the latest innovations of the Cherokee SRT, Gilles commented, “The previous model was born in hard times. We were able to restyle the 2014 a year ahead of the usual schedule, which is a great thing for our customers and the SRT brand.”

With the upgraded powertrain and list of interior features, the Cherokee SRT puts itself in direct competition with luxury SUVs from Audi and BMW, but we will have to wait for performance figures until we can fairly evaluate its competition.
