F1 Sprint at Monza: Bottas wins over Verstappen; Hamilton fifth

Monza, Italy, September 11/21 (GRW): Valtteri Bottas started from the pole in Saturday’s Sprint qualifying race and he led all the way, finishing 2.3 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen who never really challenged Bottas knowing that, regardless, the Finn wound be starting at the rear of the field on Sunday. Bottas’ penalty was due to the team having installed a fourth new engine for the season.

At the start, Hamilton had fallen back to fifth, and he finished there. With Bottas’ penalty, Hamilton will be starting on the second row for Sunday’s main race.

On the first lap of this race, two drivers had trouble. Pierre Gasly spun his AlphaTauri and hit the barrier, ending his race and bringing out the Safety Car. Robert Kubica, subbing for Kimi Räikkönen who was still in isolation after a positive COVID test, spun but he continued , finishing the race in 18th place ahead of Mick Schumacher.

When Hamilton fell back, he let McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo up into third place ahead of his teammate Lando Norris. And those places at the front remained the same until the end of the race on lap 18.

With Bottas’ penalty, Verstappen will be starting on the pole with Ricciardo alongside. The two second two will be Norris, in the other McLaren and Hamilton. The two Ferraris – Leclerc and Sainz will make up the third row.
